Things to do in Manchester on your holiday

Manchester is a city with a much to offer and if you are looking for a great UK city to explore, book a hotel room in the capital of the North and you will be amazed of its history, architecture and people.

Previously an industrial city, there are still old cotton mills around the city centre; these have now mostly been transformed into contemporary apartments and office blocks. Nowadays the canals are being cleaned up and the city’s cotton mills are converted into trendy apartments and offices.

With more than 10 years of funding to improve and develop the city centre and outer districts, the city has been completely redeveloped.

Manchester is the place to go for shopping opportunities, with The Printworks and The Triangle offering designer and unique boutiques. The Arndale Centre was the last part of the city centre to have received a facelift and is now the UK’s largest shopping centre.

Manchester now is a modern and trendy destination with designs featuring glass and steel to the traditional Victorian structures and contemporary architecture. Walk down to Albert Square and you will find the cities Town Hall, built in a gothic revival style and a significant Victorian building. Although no competition to London or Birmingham, the city has its own skyscrapers with the CIS Tower the tallest and The Beetham Tower which comprises of a Hilton hotel, a restaurant, and apartments.

To get to Manchester is not a problem, the international airport is located just a short distance from the city centre and direct train link makes the cite centre easy to reach. Piccadilly train station and the main bus station operate services all over the UK. The Metrolink is a tram system that runs around the city and further out to certain districts.

Manchester is brimming with culture and there are lots of musicians and bands that originate from here. Some of these include, Take That, Simply Red, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, The Buzzcocks, The Fall, New Order, Oasis and The Doves. The Manchester Evening News Arena is in fact the largest arena in Europe and major mainstream pop artists visit there regularly. Live music and concerts are held at venues all over the city, the most well known are Manchester Apollo and the Academy, and the more personal and smaller clubs of Roadhouse and Night and Day Cafe.

The Manchester Opera House regularly shows major touring and West End shows, the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Lowry Centre and the Palace Theatre, are all major cultural venues. If you fancy classical music concerts and more intimate evenings The Bridgewater Hall should be your pick, this famous place also hosts Manchester’s two orchestras, The Hallé Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Manchester has two universities, The University of Manchester and UMIST, and during term time the city is buzzing. With more than 500 licensed premises in the city centre they are well provided for. Clubbers, partygoers and sightseers flock into the city every weekend and head to Picadilly, Deansgate, The Lochs, or Canal Street.

Tell anyone in the world you live in Manchester and they will know of the football teams, Manchester City and Manchester United both have their training grounds in the city centre. The City of Manchester Stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and after the games were over, it became the training grounds for Manchester City. Manchester United’s grounds on the other hand are located at the famous Trafford Park. There were many sporting facilities built for the Commonwealth Games, the largest being Manchester Aquatics Centre and The Manchester Velodrome.
