So You Want To Start Camping!

by D R Clarke

Thinking of trying camping? You’ll need to make a few decisions to get you started. Are you wanting to have a trial run to see if you like it before investing in your own gear. The best idea if so, might be to hire all your camping equipment to get a feel for what your preferences are.

These questions are all important for a new camper to consider. Without question you have probably seen movies or read magazines about camping and that is how you came to your expectations of how your camping trip will be. If so, you will want to have that same picture for yourself and perhaps your family. I know of campers who will pitch a tent anywhere and others that would never consider camping without being on a powered camp site. Some people prefer not to have a large tent but rather a swag to just enjoy their camping experience under the stars. Some will just rough it and take the bare minimum in nutritional supplies and simply search for their own food. Everyone’s interpretation of camping is different and is not right or wrong.

Be realistic about what you expect from the camping experience, and what conditions are required to meet that expectation. If your idea of comfort and an enjoyable camping experience is one where you don’t need to take your own water, bath in a creek, or cook over a campfire – then you need to plan your trip around your expectations. Perhaps choose a holiday park, rather than a remote location – at least until you get some experience, and a feel for what suits you personally.

All the planning in the world won’t prevent hitches when you are camping, so try and take it in your stride, and not stress over it if you can. Pitching a tent for the first time can be an adventure in itself, and there are bound to be challenges. As long as you have the patience to accept that camping takes a little practice, you’ll be able to work through any hiccups and not let them impact your holiday. If you are stuck in a mess of ropes and pegs, and it starts to rain for example, try thinking of what you must look like, and the laugh your friends will get when you tell them about it.

Some families have a long tradition of camping holidays, spring break, summer and family reunions. It is a great way to bond with family without the interference of modern technology and neighbors. Young children can make the most fun and entertaining camping enthusiasts in the world. They often seem the most eager to plan for a camping trip. They look forward to camping with great anticipation. Imagine what a youngster can discover on a camping trip. Young people are so adaptable to camping conditions so if you have a chance to camp with younger family members, make sure you don’t pass up the experience.

Your first few camping trips are going to be a learning curve for you. You’ll know what not to take next time and what you should take next time.
